Merlin's Mannerisms [pdf] →
merlin mann is probably my personal hero. i realize it’s somewhat strange that my personal hero is some basically unknown internet “productivity guru”, but i’m ok with that. here’s a calendar of quotes by him, one for every day in 2008. i’m totally printing this out and hanging it on my wall.

“A Windows Live Service” this does look cool tho, i’ll have to check it out.  and tip-o-the-hat to the Live team for actually having a mac version. ahh, with a bit more research it looks like it was a separate company with mac support that they bought, and the live team just hasn’t killed the mac client.  yet…

Apple relents, sanctions custom ringtones! →
this is like politics in action.  the story goes like this:  people create custom ringtones; apple disables the functionality; apple starts selling ringtones; people use apple’s method to install custom ringtones again; apple disables; apple re-enables; apple includes functionality in their own software to let people make free ringtones; people create custom ringtones.

Apple takes baby steps with Canadian iTunes Store... →
finally.  it’s been way too long since the US and even the UK got their TV.  and even though i’d never buy a show on there (2$ and not even HD!) i am looking forward to taking advantage of the free episodes that they offer every once in a while.  it will be a good way to discover new things to torrent…

Wireless keyboards easily cracked →
“the “encryption” used on each regular keystroke involves xoring the key against a random one byte value determined during the initial sync with the receiver. so, if you sniff the handshake, you can decrypt the keystrokes. you really don’t have to though; there are only 256 possible encryption keys.”

Uncovered: Evidence that Mac OS X could run... →
if apple threw their weight behind wine, i bet they could do it.  i mean, they’ve made translation layers to run OS9 apps in OSX, and to run PowerPC code on intel machines.  if i could get an apple-nice solution for running all those weird chip programming apps without booting windows in virtualization, i would be a happy fellow.
